FAQs - Short Answers to Common Questions

We will try to post as many of the common questions/answers as possible if we see a trend developing with your calls/emails. To save search time, we have divided up the topics. Categories will be added/dropped as the event approaches.

Please keep in mind that in no way is this link intended to be the definitive answer to all question. We simply hope it helps on the quick answers. This page will be written in a casual conversational manner, not as "legal" text. Questions regarding intricate skill legalities are to be directed to PCA.

Registration Questions

- Due to the Strike/Work to Rule situations in both BC and Alberta, teams from these provinces will be given an "open" deadline to register. Please help the organizers out by faxing your registration forms as soon as possible then keep up informed as to your on/off position.

- It helps the planning people if you email us or fax in your registration forms before or when you mail the actual payments. Just a qick note saying that team"x" is coming, we have 22 athletes and we are in the "x" division is appreciated

Hotels and Travel

- As of Sept 21, PCA is pleased to announce a new association with CSTT Sports Management International. CSTT will be handling all requests for team hotel, air and ground transportation needs for the 2002 Nationals. Through their collective group purchasing power, they can offer your team excellent rates below all published team discounts and fairs. As soon as the paperwork is in, we will post a link directly to the reps at CSTT. *Bonus, the main person in charge of this branch of operations has a daughter who is on a competitive cheer team. He knows and fully understands the nature of cheerleading and cheer teams. Save yourself/team a ton of hassle and leg work by letting CSTT do ALL the work. They do not add fees or charge you for their service. Sweet. CSTT: 1-800-304-6346 Bill (ext. 333) or Matt (ext. 332) | email: sports@sport-travel.com

- As you head west past the airport, DIXON Rd changes name into AIRPORT Rd.

- Almost every hotel listed on the link, offers a shuttle to/from the airport. Some are free, some have cost $5-$6.00. Please inquire with CSTT or the hotel.

- The International Centre has FREE PARKING for 4000 vehicles. Sweet.

- The event was designed to leave Sunday open for teams to visit the city and/or to travel. The event overview schedule will be posted on the home page link when ready. Only the Junior National Challenge Cup will take place on Sunday April 28.

- Teams are certainly welcome to seek out hotels away from the "airport strip". Rates may be lower and there are many areas with more restaurants, entertainment and shopping that high school aged competitors would enjoy. There are 3 major highways leading to the Toronto Airport area and teams can stay a fair distance away yet still be able to get to the International Centre very easily. Please inquire with CSTT about off-site or non airport area accommodations.

Rules, Regulations and all those little things that teams/coaches worry about

- Please refer to the RULES link first.

- re. double bases that are transitioned across to a second set of catchers (backward, forward with/without twists etc.): These are legal provided you reatain contact with the top all the way in to the tha catch. A number of teams have called in regarding this type of disount/transition. All the ruling is intended to do is A. require that you maitain contact or B. that one of the original primary bases is also one of the primary catchers (thereby effectively limiting the distance and increasing the probability of safety). If you are in ANY WAY unclear about this, please call us for clarification.

- Double full twisting dismounts are LEGAL. We recommend that the third/head spot be agreesive in protecting the top and we realize that sometimes, you may not get a perfect "scoop". Always be maximally safe.

- The PCA Rules for Competition a quite liberal and takes into account wide differences in provincial standards.

- The "Rule Book" is very short. A basic rule of thumb: be safe, be prudent, have fun.

- "sparkles" and eyeglasses are permitted.

- No division is permitted to free-flight flip/invert basket tosses or Double Base (Prep) dismounts

- there will be absolutely NO rescheduling or preferential positioning to accommodate for athlete situations such as weddings, recitals etc. Please don't ask.

- Team members may step off the mat without penalty. If you tumble or stunt off the mat and the judges feel that in doing so, you were being unsafe, you may be assessed a penalty under the Spotting and Safety category.

- Routines are to be ALL MUSIC. There is not a section on the score sheet for the evaluation of cheer. IF a team opts to include words/chants etc along with the music, the judges will asses that under Overall Impression.

- The decision to go with an ALL MUSIC format was made in an effort to negate Regional, Language and "Style" differences. PCA certainly does not wish to be perceived as being against cheering, we are simply trying to make the evaluation as common as possible for all squads.

- Front "swan" or prone catches/cradles require 4 catchers

- The maximum length for routines is 2 min, 30 sec. There is no minimum length nor penalty for running short.

- The Partner Stunt and Varsity Quads competition routines are to be no longer than 60 seconds. The Co-ed pairs are to provide their own spotter (yes, it can be the coach). Quads will not have a spotter with them (aside from the PCA floor spotter)

- Regarding hair clips, barrettes and all that sort of stuff: be safe. You will not be "penalized" for using a certain type of hair retaining device...just be smart.

- Sunglasses, Hats and gimmicky clothing props are not permitted. Please keep the attire on the side of "traditional".

- All divisions are judged with the same rules and safety guidelines.

- There will be 3-4 spotters on the floor during your performance. They will be instructed to spot, catch and protect. If they inadvertently get in the way of a performer or in any way interrupt your routine, the judges will of course disregard any negative affect caused by the spotter. With this in mind, we will instruct the spotters to be present during warm-up runs and they will also speak to you/your team prior to stepping onto the floor. Please tip them off re. weak points or intersecting tumbling passes and odd dismounts etc.
